Punk rock takes over… a Chelsea art gallery? Yup, you have read correctly; the first ever NYC exhibition to show off the age-defining posters, flyers, ‘zines, and clothing to come out of the punk movement (1976-1982) is now up for your viewing (not kicking, please) pleasure at the Steven Kasher Gallery.
This is all mostly thanks to local collector and music lover Andrew Kirshin, who began amassing his collection of over 800 pieces in 1977 and who carefully culled 200 of his rarest and coolest pieces to share with the public. The exhibit, entitled Rude and Reckless, also coincides perfectly with the 35th anniversary of punk rock itself considering the release of The Ramones’ first album and the fabled Anarchy in the UK tour both went down in ’76. Also on display at the gallery is the photography of Laura Levine: Musicians, ‘an insider’s look at the artists at the forefront of rock, punk, indie rock, post-punk, hip-hop, New Wave, and No Wave,’ which is definitely worth a look as well.
