SHEARLING IS BACK!

There is certainly a lot of fur around nowadays… from faux rabbit fur vests to dyed fur capes to embellishments on cuffs and collars.  The fall/winter runways this year seemed to favor a more casual alternative—and we’re talking shearling (a.k.a. sheepskin).  This nubby wool was initially popular in the early 80’s, again in the early 00’s, and now once more this fall, shearling has taken center stage—much of it very cleverly updated.

Two “it” silhouettes this fall are Burberry’s Trench and Vince’s Drape-Front Jacket.  The shearling in both of these jackets is very much understated and absolutely chic, whereas ADAM’s Popped-Collar Parka and Rick Owens’ Asymmetrical Zip Front Jacket seem more suited for adventurous late nights on your beau’s Harley.  Proenza Schouler’s Hooded Toggle Jacket is so beautifully designed and executed that I would be willing to part with all of my beloved hoodies in a heartbeat, of which I have many, just to wrap myself in its luxurious warmth for a mere season .

As far as shoes go, Burberry Prorsum’s Platform Ankle Boots are a winner in my book as are Topshop’s Miley Fur Buckle Boots and Polar Fur Mule Clogs. Check out Topshop‘s website if your wallet (much like mine) is still dwelling over the recession—they are offering (as always) some amazing finds for this fall season.

One final note: Less is more with shearling; overkill could leave you looking like you just trudged off the set of Northern Exposure
